Secure shredding, simpler recycling

Last month, new recycling rules came into force for businesses with ten or more full-time employees. Businesses and workplaces must now minimise and separate waste, and ensure disposal methods like paper shredding are safe, secure and legal.

The ‘Simpler Recycling’ rules were implemented on March 31st (although micro firms with fewer than ten employees have until March 2027 to comply) requiring businesses to separate their waste before it’s collected, including dry recyclable materials like paper and cardboard.

The new guidelines apply to all businesses, including offices, supermarkets, manufacturing facilities and airports, as well as to healthcare establishments and academic institutions – you can read the specific guidance for your sector on the WRAP website.

What are my responsibilities?

The government says that businesses must do everything they practically can to reduce waste, with a focus on prevention or reuse, recycling, and recovery of waste.

This means that as a business, it’s your responsibility to sort and store waste safely and securely, and to complete a waste transfer note for waste that leaves your premises.

Some waste should be recycled – anything that’s like dry recyclable household waste, which includes paper, cardboard, glass, metal and plastic – and removal services should be checked out for compliance.

The regulations state that waste must be stored safely in a secure place, in suitable containers that are labelled with their contents and covered to stop waste flying away, becoming contaminated, or preventing reuse.
